Colourful bespoke shaker kitchen with dog bed. Painted in Farrow & Ball’s Cooks Blue, which is a great fun colour and adds a real freshness to the room. There are plenty of bespoke features, pull out chopping board, knife drawer, vegetable baskets, LED lights in scaffold plank shelf and because the owner is a dog lover, an under counter dog bed and more!
The worktops are wooden and composite to create different focal points and add texture. Additionally the wooden worktop adds to the country cottage styling. To enhance further the traditional feel of the cottage, a double butler sink and brass tap have been fitted.
Shaker style kitchens are very versatile and work in traditional style properties as well as modern. This one is in an old cottage, but works just as well in a new build. Modern fixtures and fittings can be used to create a more contemporary feel.

Shaker style kitchens and furniture is so popular and rightly so, it will fit perfectly in an old cottage, Victorian terrace, modern new build and everything in between. Shaker style is truly versatile, depending on the finish; unpainted solid timber, painted a neutral or bright colour, or the accessories put with it, it will look traditional or contemporary.
The origins of this furniture style come from The United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, commonly known as the Shakers, they moved from England to the USA in 1744. They set up one of the largest and most successful communal projects in America, known as the Shaking Quakers (they liked to dance during worship).
Shakers were largely self-sufficient, they wanted to live separately from society in an attempt to build a heaven on earth. Due to this they grew their own food, built their own homes and workplaces, made clothes, tools and furniture.
Shakers followed a strict set of rules outlining behaviour, appearance and environment, their principals of honesty, simplicity and utility manifested in the furniture they created. Shaker furniture focused on craftsmanship, simplicity and integrity, any form of embellishment or decoration was considered a sin of pride, and so shaker furniture was minimalistic.
Most shaker styles today are still simplistic following the traditional simple lines but can also have more detailed adornment such as beading.
A bespoke Shaker kitchen will outlive any other style of cabinetry, fashions will come and go, but Shaker is definitely here to stay, and if its painted and your taste changes, paint it a new colour and change the handles!
Quartz Worktops; in our last post we high-lighted Granite as a worktop material, there are of course many others to choose from, Quartz worktops being one.
Quartz worktops are a very good alternative to granite and can work out cheaper if you need to tweak your budget. Quartz worktops are fabricated from natural quartz, about 90% quartz and the balance being made up of resins, glass or pigments to improve appearance and create variety.
As quartz is reconstituted it is possible to create a uniform colour, unlike granite which is of course 100% natural stone and therefore not constant in appearance. Quartz is manufactured in many colours (not all naturally occurring) and can also be made to replicate marble or granite with veining. It is even possible to replicate very popular marbles and granites, for example the very fashionable white Statuario marble, therefore creating a more hardwearing and affordable version of a very exclusive and costly stone.
Quartz is a non-porous material and is therefore very hygienic, it will not allow bacteria to grow and is also unlikely to stain, so very easy to maintain. Quartz is very hardwearing and resistant to scratches and marks; it really is a hardworking worktop.

When you are planning your new kitchen, picking the worktops can be a very daunting process. Choosing the right one for you can be a challenge, with many materials and colours with different properties to pick from. Make a start by thinking of how you use your kitchen. If you like baking, granite worktops are a great place to start, it keeps pastry nice and cool whilst working with it directly on the worktop.
Granite is one of the most popular materials to use in kitchens and with good reason; granite is a natural material, and one of the hardest substances in the world. As it is natural no two slabs are exactly the same, so each piece is unique. There are many colours to choose from with a variety of thickness, grain and veins. The surface can also be ‘leathered’, meaning the stone is sand blasted to raise the vein which reveals a very tactile surface.
Granite worktops are easy to look after and is very hardwearing, although it is not recommended to place a very hot pan on the surface as the stone can have weaknesses in it as it is a natural substance. Granite is easy to clean and as long as things like red wine, oil and lemon juice is not left to soak in, will not stain, it really is a very forgiving material to use for your worktop surface.

This shaker style kitchen is a bespoke frameless style cabinet from our Lewesdon range , a more affordable manufacturing process than a fully bespoke in frame cabinet. The joy of having your kitchen individually designed and manufactured here in our own workshop means we can mix it up for you. So, here we have a frameless shaker style kitchen from our Lewesdon range designed and made by us paired with a kitchen island with bespoke bookcase and end panels, also designed and made by us. The kitchen is painted in Farrow & Ball’s Ammonite and the island in Farrow & Ball’s Scotch Blue, worktops are Quartz and the island top is oak. Having different worktop surfaces in one room is a great way of defining different areas and if you want low maintenance it is a good idea to keep wood away from the sink. There are many ways to use different worktops within one kitchen, ask us about different ways to incorporate this into your project.
Shaker is a traditional style of furniture design incorporating clean lines and functionality, with minimal fuss and clutter, it is a style that will stand the test of time and out live many others. It can be kept very simple and traditional or styled with more contemporary pieces and colours to create a more modern look. The great thing about a painted shaker kitchen is how future proofed it is, if your taste changes or you just fancy an update, paint it a new colour!
